Description

Product Description

Mahaflox 400mg Tablet contains Moxifloxacin, an antibiotic that belongs to the fluoroquinolone group. It is used against susceptible bacteria in selected infections, particularly certain respiratory and other bacterial infections where Moxifloxacin is considered appropriate.

Moxifloxacin works by interfering with bacterial enzymes required for DNA replication and repair. This prevents susceptible bacteria from multiplying and ultimately leads to their death. Because fluoroquinolone antibiotics can cause serious adverse reactions and are not suitable for every infection, Mahaflox should not be used for routine treatment of viral illnesses such as the common cold or uncomplicated flu.

The choice of antibiotic should take into account the suspected organism, site of infection, local resistance patterns, previous antibiotic exposure and the patient’s medical history.

Uses

  • Treatment of selected bacterial infections caused by susceptible microorganisms.
  • May be prescribed for certain community-acquired respiratory infections, including bacterial pneumonia.
  • May be used for selected bacterial sinus infections when Moxifloxacin is considered appropriate.
  • May be prescribed for certain skin and soft-tissue bacterial infections.
  • May be used for other susceptible infections only when specifically selected by the treating doctor.

Key Benefits

  • Contains Moxifloxacin 400 mg in an oral tablet.
  • Acts against susceptible bacteria through inhibition of bacterial DNA-related enzymes.
  • Provides systemic antibiotic therapy for infections where Moxifloxacin is medically appropriate.
  • Convenient oral dosage form for a prescribed treatment course.
  • Can be used when the treating doctor considers a fluoroquinolone appropriate for the identified or suspected bacterial infection.

How to Use

  • Take Mahaflox 400mg exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
  • Swallow the tablet whole with water.
  • It may be taken with or without food according to your doctor’s instructions.
  • Take the medicine at the same time each day if advised.
  • Complete the prescribed course even if you start feeling better earlier.
  • Do not skip doses or stop the medicine on your own unless your doctor tells you to do so.
  • Keep Mahaflox separate from products containing aluminium, magnesium, iron or zinc because these can reduce Moxifloxacin absorption. Follow the interval recommended by your doctor or pharmacist.
  • Do not use leftover tablets for a future illness.

How It Works

Moxifloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes that are essential for copying, repairing and maintaining bacterial DNA. Blocking these enzymes disrupts bacterial replication and survival. This mechanism allows Moxifloxacin to act against a range of susceptible Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as some atypical respiratory pathogens. It has no useful effect against viral infections.

Precautions & Warnings

  • Moxifloxacin can cause serious and potentially irreversible adverse reactions, including tendinitis and tendon rupture, peripheral neuropathy and central nervous system effects. Stop the medicine and seek medical attention for tendon pain or swelling, persistent tingling or numbness, weakness, burning sensations, severe anxiety, confusion, hallucinations or other significant neurological symptoms.
  • Moxifloxacin can prolong the QT interval and may cause serious heart-rhythm abnormalities. It should be avoided in people with certain rhythm disorders and used with caution with medicines that can also prolong the QT interval. Seek urgent medical attention for fainting, severe palpitations or an irregular heartbeat.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a history of tendon disorders associated with quinolone antibiotics.
  • Inform your doctor if you have epilepsy, seizures, peripheral neuropathy, significant heart disease or a known abnormal heart rhythm.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease or electrolyte abnormalities such as low potassium or magnesium.
  • Use of Moxifloxacin can occasionally cause significant blood-glucose changes, particularly in people taking medicines for diabetes. Monitor as advised by your doctor.
  • Fluoroquinolones can rarely cause severe aortic complications in people at increased risk. Tell your doctor if you have an aortic aneurysm, a history of vascular disease or other relevant risk factors.
  • Avoid unnecessary strenuous exercise if you develop tendon pain during treatment and seek medical advice promptly.
  • Do not take antacids or mineral supplements containing aluminium, magnesium, iron or zinc at the same time as Mahaflox because they can interfere with absorption.
  • Tell your doctor about all medicines, vitamins and supplements you take, particularly heart-rhythm medicines, corticosteroids, diabetes medicines and other antibiotics.
  • Consult your doctor before using Mahaflox during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Antibiotics can sometimes cause severe or persistent diarrhoea due to Clostridioides difficile. Seek medical advice if significant diarrhoea develops during or after treatment.
  • Do not use Mahaflox for a viral cold or flu unless a bacterial infection has been diagnosed or strongly suspected by a healthcare professional.
  • Seek urgent medical care for severe allergic reactions, breathing difficulty, fainting, seizures, sudden weakness, severe tendon pain or significant changes in heart rhythm.
