Description

Product Description

Risdone-Forte Tablet combines an atypical antipsychotic, Risperidone, with the anticholinergic medicine Trihexyphenidyl Hydrochloride. Each tablet contains Risperidone 4 mg and Trihexyphenidyl 2 mg. Intas Pharmaceuticals Ltd. markets this formulation for use under medical supervision.

Risperidone is used to control symptoms associated with schizophrenia, such as disturbed thinking, hallucinations, delusions and significant behavioural changes. Trihexyphenidyl is included to help manage certain drug-induced movement symptoms, including stiffness, tremor and other extrapyramidal reactions that may occur with antipsychotic medicines. Because this combination affects the central nervous system, treatment should be individualized by the prescribing doctor.

Uses

  • Management of schizophrenia.
  • Helps control symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions and disorganized thinking associated with schizophrenia.
  • Trihexyphenidyl may help reduce certain movement-related effects associated with antipsychotic treatment.
  • May be used when the treating psychiatrist considers both components appropriate for the patient’s treatment plan.

Key Benefits

  • Combines antipsychotic and anticholinergic actions in one tablet.
  • Risperidone helps reduce core symptoms associated with schizophrenia.
  • Trihexyphenidyl can help relieve selected movement symptoms caused by antipsychotic medicines.
  • Provides a single formulation when both medicines are prescribed together.
  • Available as a tablet for oral administration.

How to Use

  • Take Risdone-Forte as prescribed by your doctor.
  • Swallow the tablet whole with water unless your doctor gives different instructions.
  • It may generally be taken with or without food.
  • Take it consistently according to the regimen prescribed for you.
  • Do not change the dose, frequency or duration on your own.
  • Do not stop Risdone-Forte suddenly without speaking to your doctor, even if you feel better.

How It Works

Risperidone acts on neurotransmitter systems in the brain, particularly dopamine and serotonin receptors, helping regulate abnormal thoughts, perceptions and behaviour associated with psychotic disorders. Trihexyphenidyl has anticholinergic activity and reduces excessive cholinergic activity in areas of the nervous system involved in movement control. This can lessen symptoms such as rigidity, tremor and some other extrapyramidal effects that may occur during antipsychotic therapy. The two ingredients therefore serve different purposes within the same treatment regimen.

Side Effects

  • Drowsiness or sedation.
  • Dizziness.
  • Headache.
  • Dry mouth.
  • Constipation.
  • Blurred vision.
  • Nausea or stomach discomfort.
  • Tremor or other movement-related symptoms.
  • Increased appetite or weight gain.
  • Difficulty passing urine.

Seek medical attention promptly for severe muscle stiffness, high fever, marked confusion, uncontrolled movements, fainting, seizures or other severe or unusual symptoms.

Precautions & Warnings

  • Increased mortality in elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis: Risperidone is not approved for the treatment of dementia-related psychosis and has been associated with an increased risk of death in elderly patients with this condition. Do not use Risdone-Forte for this purpose unless specifically directed by an appropriate specialist.
  • Risdone-Forte can cause drowsiness, dizziness or impaired alertness. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how the medicine affects you.
  • Alcohol may increase dizziness and sedation and should be avoided unless your doctor advises otherwise.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart disease, abnormal heart rhythm, low blood pressure, seizures, Parkinson’s disease, glaucoma or difficulty passing urine.
  • Inform your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems, as treatment may require closer monitoring or adjustment.
  • Risperidone may increase weight, blood glucose and lipid levels; periodic monitoring may be advised during longer-term treatment.
  • Report unusual involuntary movements, severe restlessness, marked stiffness or other significant changes in movement to your doctor.
  • Tell your doctor about all medicines, vitamins and supplements you take because interactions may affect treatment.
